Abstract of Project: Ultra-Fast and Ultra Low-Power Proton Memristors for Fully Neural Networks

报告简介:

Fast and ultra-low power "in-memory computing" architecture is crucial in the era of big data. Memristors, particularly resistive random access memory (RRAM), have emerged as a prominent memory technology. However, despite advancements in RRAM, no single device has achieved simultaneous fast switching, low power, and stable operation due to challenges such as nonlinearity, variability, and poor endurance.

Liu’s group aims to develop fast, ultra-low-power, and reconfigurable memristors using a prototype RRAM device for neuromorphic computing, which preliminary achieved rapid switching (<10 ns, >104 times that of biological synapses), low power (<7 fJ), and stability (endurance >150 million for volatile and 104 for non-volatile, retention >105 s extrapolated to 10 years) in a single RRAM device by using a new class of transition-metal nitride halides (TMNs) vdW materials with the ability to transfer between insulator and metal states under electric fields. The device is adopted to emulate the intricate plasticity mechanisms of the brain, encompassing both short-term plasticity (STP) and long-term plasticity (LTP). The goal is to engineer a single prototype device capable of replicating behaviors like spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP), aimed at engineering a single prototype device capable of replicating behaviors and effectively mirroring the foundations of learning and memory within a synthetic framework. The continuous development of this research field could usher in efficient, high-speed, and adaptive computing systems with far-reaching implications.

报告人简介:

Dr. Zheng Liu received his B.S. degree (2005) at Nankai University. He completed his Ph.D at National Center for Nanoscience and Technology, China, and then worked in Prof. Pulickel M. Ajayan and Prof. Jun Lou's groups as a joint postdoc research fellow (2010~2012) and research scientist (2012~2013) at Rice University (USA), focusing on the synthesis and applications of two-dimensional (2D) crystals. Since 2013, he joined Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, as a Nanyang Assistant Professor, and currently a professor.

His work now focuses on the following topics: 1) Synthesis and engineering of high-quality and large-size novel 2D monolayers such as graphene and TMDs; 2) Physical properties of 2D monolayers such as 2D superconductivity, 2D ferroelectricity, 2D ferromagnetism and 2D Wyle semi-metals; 3) Applications of 2D materials such as novel semiconducting electronics. He has published > 40 papers in Nature and Science serial journals, with total citations > 50,000 and H-index of 110 (Google Scholar, as of Aug 2023). He was awarded the prestigious Singapore NRF Fellowship(2013), the elite Nanyang Assistant Professorship (2013), ICON-2DMAT Young Scientist Award (2018), the prestigious Singapore Young Scientist Award (2018), Asia's Rising Scientists and the Nanyang Research Award (Young Investigator) (2019) and the awarded of the pretigous APEC ASPIRE Prize (2023). He was named Materials Research Society of Singapore Chair Professorship in 2019 and has been the highly cited researcher from 2018.
